The Danish Way Every Day: A Book That Reflects Our Play-Led Values

At Moss Hall Play Centre, we are always reflecting on how we can best support children to grow into confident, capable and emotionally secure young people. Recently, one of our trustees recommended a book that immediately resonated with our ethos: The Danish Way Every Day – A Practical, Age-by-Age Guide to Raising Confident, Capable Kids Like the Happiest People in the World.

Denmark consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world, and this book explores why. Rather than focusing on targets, pressure or early achievement, the Danish approach centres on trust, play, independence and emotional wellbeing — values that sit at the heart of our after-school and holiday provision.

Why the Danish approach matters

One of the key messages of The Danish Way Every Day is the importance of giving children the freedom to explore, make mistakes and learn through real experiences. Danish parenting places a strong emphasis on outdoor play, manageable risk-taking and child-led exploration. Children are trusted to climb, build, negotiate and problem-solve — not because it is easy, but because it helps them develop resilience, confidence and self-belief.

This mirrors what we see every day in our setting. When children are given time and space for unstructured, free play, they naturally develop social skills, creativity and emotional awareness. They learn how to work things out for themselves, how to cope with challenges and how to collaborate with others.

Play, independence and emotional resilience

The book also highlights the role of play in supporting emotional resilience. Through play, children process their feelings, explore relationships and make sense of the world around them. Whether it’s imaginative role play, building dens, rough and tumble play or simply spending time with friends, these experiences help children understand themselves and others.

At Moss Hall Play Centre, we strongly believe that play is not a break from learning — it is learning. Our playworkers are trained to support children without directing them, allowing play to unfold naturally while ensuring a safe and inclusive environment. This approach aligns closely with the Danish philosophy of guiding rather than controlling.

A practical guide for everyday life

What makes The Danish Way Every Day particularly valuable is its practical, age-by-age structure. It offers realistic, achievable ideas that parents and carers can apply in everyday life, without pressure or perfection. The focus is not on doing more, but on trusting children more — and trusting the process of growing up.

Why this book resonates with us

This book reinforces our belief that children thrive when they are given time, trust and the freedom to play. In a world that is increasingly fast-paced, screen-focused and outcome-driven, the Danish approach reminds us of the importance of slowing down and allowing children to be children.

We are grateful to our trustee for recommending this thoughtful and inspiring read, and we highly recommend it to parents and carers who are interested in nurturing confident, capable and happy children through play, independence and connection.
